SAN DIEGO (AP) -The San Diego Padres made another move to bolster their bullpen, recalling left-hander Justin Hampson from Triple-A Portland and optioning Mike Thompson to the Beavers.
Hampson was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in six relief appearances for the Beavers. He made his major league debut for Colorado in September and was claimed off waivers by the Padres on Oct. 11.
Thompson was 0-1 with a 7.84 ERA in five games.
Manager Bud Black said the Padres needed a fresher arm in the bullpen after playing consecutive games of 14 and 12 innings, and having two starters make short appearances last weekend.
“We’ve had a lot of stress on the bullpen just as far as innings and appearances,” Black said.
Thompson pitched in two of the last three games.
“He’s a guy who’s been worked quite often and in volume the last six games and we felt as though we need another arm to help ease the bullpen,” Black said.
