TORONTO (AP) -The Blue Jays designated right-hander Randy Wells for assignment Wednesday and purchased the contract of left-hander Jesse Carlson from Triple-A Syracuse.
Toronto acquired Wells from the Chicago Cubs in the Rule 5 draft and must negotiate a deal with the Cubs or offer him back to Chicago for $25,000. Wells must also clear waivers for a deal to be struck.
Wells made one appearance for Toronto, working a scoreless inning.
A 15th round pick by Detroit in the June, 2002 draft, Carlson signed with Toronto as a free agent last winter. He hasn’t allowed a run over 3 2-3 innings in two games at Syracuse
“Jesse almost made the team out of spring training and we’re facing a lot of lefties, we’re a little beat up now,” manager John Gibbons said.
