TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -Chad Tracy and Miguel Montero increased their baseball-related activities on Friday, although Arizona manager Bob Melvin said their return to play is a ways off.
Tracy is recovering from right knee surgery. The infielder’s rehabilitation was set back significantly because of a blood clot that required medication. Catcher Montero has been sidelined because of a fractured right index finger.
“Tracy took some ground balls today, did some running, did some agilities,” Melvin said before the Diamondbacks played the Los Angeles Dodgers. “It’s a big day for him, so we’ll see how he responds tomorrow.”
Tracy has had no problem at the plate.
“He could come into a game right now and get good swings,” Melvin said. “That will be probably quick to come, but he’s got to be able to move around on the field to the extent that he can get out there for a while.”
Montero was injured by a foul tip during winter baseball in Venezuela. At first, it was not believed to be a serious problem, but it did not respond to normal treatment.
“He took some soft tosses and some t-ball work and then is throwing 60 feet,” Melvin said. “We’re still probably a week a way from games for him, yet it’s good to actually get him some baseball activity.”
Both players will start the season on the disabled list. Trot Nixon is the leading candidate to take Tracy’s roster spot, with Robby Hammock backing up Chris Snyder at catcher.
