JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – Giancarlo Stanton has been hit in the back of the helmet by a fastball from the Miami Marlins’ top pitching prospect, Jose Fernandez.
Stanton was struck on the lower edge of the helmet above his neck during an intrasquad game Wednesday. He remained on his feet but left the game, then signed autographs as he walked to a golf cart and was driven by a team trainer to the clubhouse for evaluation.
The beaning came on the first pitch from Fernandez to Stanton, who led the NL in slugging percentage last year and hit 37 home runs.
Fernandez was the Marlins’ top amateur draft pick in 2011. He is expected to start the season with Double-A Jacksonville and is considered a candidate to break into the majors this summer.
