ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -The Texas Rangers sent first baseman Chris Shelton outright to Triple-A Oklahoma on Thursday after he cleared waivers.
Shelton, a non-roster invitee to spring training, was designated for assignment Jan. 14 to make room on the roster for right-hander Kazuo Fukumori. Shelton was acquired last month from Detroit for outfielder Freddy Guzman.
The Tigers’ opening-day first baseman in 2006, Shelton has a .281 career average with 35 home runs in 249 games, all with Detroit. He spent last season with Triple-A Toledo, where he hit .269 with 14 homers and 65 RBIs.
