Rockies falter in middle innings
Colorado allowed two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings plus another in the sixth to fall behind by five runs in yesterday’s Game 163 tiebreaker at the Dodgers, eventually falling 5-2. Charlie Blackmon went 2-for-3 with a walk in the defeat. Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story both finished 1-for-4 with a solo home run, going back-to-back in the ninth inning. German Marquez was saddled with the loss as he surrendered four runs (two earned) on five hits with nine strikeouts and two walks over 4 2/3 innings.
Cubs held to three hits
Chicago could not get on track offensively as it lost 3-1 in its NL Central tiebreaker game at home versus Milwaukee yesterday afternoon. The Brewers scored the two go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie. Lorenzo Cain ended the contest 1-for-4 with an RBI as his single broke the deadlock. Christian Yelich went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI. Ryan Braun finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. Orlando Arcia was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs. Domingo Santana contributed a pinch-hit RBI double and scored a run. Corey Knebel threw one spotless inning of relief with a strikeout to record the win. Josh Hader gave up one hit with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief for his 12th save of the season.
Kyle Freeland (17-7, 2.85 ERA) will draw the start today for the Rockies, while the Cubs will counter with Jon Lester (18-6, 3.32).
MLB Betting Trends
Colorado
The Rockies are 1-8 in their last nine playoff games. Colorado is 9-2 in its last 11 games overall.
Chicago
The Cubs are 11-3 in Lester’s last 14 Tuesday starts. Chicago is 2-6 in its last eight home games versus the Rockies.
Prediction:
There are a lot of things factoring against the Rockies here. First, traveling from LA to Chicago while the Cubs get to rest comfortably at home isn’t ideal. Secondly, Freeland will be pitching on short rest while Lester is on normal rest. Chicago is also 51-31 at home compared to Colorado’s 44-38 road record. The Rockies just aren’t quite the same team away from Coors Field and with the quick turnaround, I have to take Chicago here.
