Cardinals vs. Cubs Prediction
The St. Louis Cardinals sent the host rival Chicago Cubs to a damaging loss yesterday as the NL Central race is now tied at the top. Will Chicago win today to give it a chance at a division title or will a loss drop it into the NL Wild Card Game?

Mikolas stifles Cubs
St. Louis starter Miles Mikolas gave up one unearned run on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks over eight innings yesterday to pick up the win in a 2-1 triumph at the Cubs. Carlos Martinez pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save of the season. Matt Carpenter was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI to help pace the offense. Paul DeJong went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Murphy has two-hit game
Daniel Murphy finished 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot in Saturday’s loss to St. Louis. Ben Zobrist was 1-for-4 and scored the lone run. Anthony Rizzo finished 1-for-4, while Jason Heyward ended the contest 1-for-3. Cole Hamels was the tough-luck losing pitcher as he surrendered two runs (one earned) on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over seven innings of work.
Jack Flaherty (8-8, 3.16 ERA) will start today for the Cardinals, while the Cubs are going with Mike Montgomery (5-6, 3.99).
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis
The over is 9-2 in the last 11 Cardinals games overall. St. Louis is 16-6 in its last 22 road games.
Chicago
The over is 7-1-1 in the last nine meetings in Chicago. The Cubs are 14-5 in their last 19 home games versus the Cardinals.
Prediction:
Chicago hasn’t played with a whole lot of urgency lately and it has the lesser starting pitcher on the mound today. If St. Louis isn’t going to make the playoffs, what better alternative than knocking its rivals into the NL Wild Card Game. I’m taking the Cardinals to get it done today as a spoiler.
