Giants vs. Diamondbacks Pick
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, the Diamondbacks are a -140 favorite to win on the moneyline. The Giants are a +120 underdog and the over-under is set at 10.
On the mound for the Giants will be Jeff Samardzija (9-15, 4.51 ERA), while the Diamondbacks are going with Braden Shipley (0-1, 5.40). Samardzija carries a 1,15 WHIP with 201 strikeouts in 201 2/3 innings. He allowed four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks over 4 1/3 innings in a 4-2 loss at the Dodgers his last start. Samardzija has a 4.99 ERA in 16 road starts. Shipley has a 1.85 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 21 2/3 innings. He last started a game on August 20 when he allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits with three stirkeouts and two walks over 5 2/3 innings in a 12-5 loss at the Twins.
San Francisco is 62-96 and 26-54 on the road, while Arizona comes in at 91-67 and 51-29 at home. The Diamondbacks have won six of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone over six times including the last three games.
Arizona won Tuesday's game 11-4 as J.D. Martinez went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and six RBIs. A.J. Pollock was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb both scored two runs. Ketel Marte was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, a walk, a run and two RBIs. Christian Walker added a pinch-hit home run. Robbie Ray allowed two unearned runs over five innings to get the win. Tim Fedorowicz went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs to pace the Giants. Matt Moore allowed eight runs (seven earned) over 1 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Samardzija is having a much better season than his record or ERA indicates. He is fully capable of shutting down a strong offense such as the D-backs. With Arizona having locked up its NL Wild Card spot, its merely trying to stay healthy and tune up for its postseason tilt that it will host next week. Shipley hasn't proven he can consistently get out MLB hitters and while the Giants have a weak offense, they have a ballpark upgrade here and the better starting pitcher. We're taking a shot with the underdog.
