Pitching for the Rays will be Blake Snell (4-6, 4.01 ERA), while the Yankees turn to Jordan Montgomery (8-7, 4.06). Snell holds a 1.34 WHIP with 105 strikeouts in 121 1/3 innings. He threw seven shutout innings in an 8-1 home win over the Cubs, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Snell has a 4.26 ERA in 12 road starts. Montgomery has a 1.26 WHIP with 136 strikeouts over 144 innings. He pitched six shutout innings with four hits allowed, six strikeouts and one walk in a 9-3 home win over the Orioles. Montgomery has a 3.73 ERA in 13 home starts.
The Rays have a 76-80 record and are 37-41 on the road, while the Yankees are 87-69 and 47-28 at home. New York has won six of the last 10 meetings and the over-under is 3-6-1 in those games.
Tampa Bay is coming off a 9-4 loss to the Orioles as it split the four-game road series. Kevin Kiermaier hit a solo home run, while Logan Morrison was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Corey Dickerson finished 2-for-4. Jesus Sucre went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Chris Archer gave up five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings to take the loss. The Yankees defeated the Royals 11-3 in a home makeup game Monday afternoon. Aaron Judge was 2-for-4 with his 49th home run, tying the rookie single-season record. He scored twice, drove in three and drew a walk. Brett Gardner was 2-for-4 with a double, three runs, an RBI and a walk. Gary Sanchez finished 3-for-5 with a home run and a double. Didi Gregorius was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs. Matt Holliday was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBIs. Greg Bird finished 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. CC Sabathia allowed three earned runs over six innings to pick up the win.
Snell has been pitching good ball lately and cut down on his walks allowed. Montgomery was also strong in his last start, but with the Yankees having little to play for but tune up for the playoffs this could be a game they let slip by. With the way Snell has been dealing, we like the Rays in an upset.
