On the mound for Miami will be Odrisamer Despaigne (0-3, 4.37 ERA), while the Rockies will turn to Tyler Chatwood (8-13, 4.56). Despaigne has a 1.46 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 45 1/3 innings. He allowed three earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk in six innings during a 5-4 home win over the Mets. Despaigne has allowed 19 runs (14 earned) in 16 1/3 innings on the road. Chatwood holds a 1.44 WHIP with 115 strikeouts in 142 innings. He surrendered three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks over six innings innings in a 4-0 loss at the Giants his last outing. Chatwood has a 5.85 ERA in 64 1/3 innings.
The Marlins are 73-82 overall and 33-45 on the road, while the Rockies come in at 84-72 and 43-32 at home. Miami leads the season series 3-0 after a home sweep in August. The total went under in two of those games.
On Sunday, the Marlins lost their second game in three days at the Diamondbacks via a 3-2 defeat. Giancarlo Stanton was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI to pace the offense. Justin Nicolino took the loss in relief. The Rockies opened a two-game lead for the second NL Wild Card spot Sunday via an 8-4 win at the Padres. Charlie Blackmon was 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk and three runs scored. Mark Reynolds was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIS. Pat Valaika went 2-for-2 off the bench with a double, a home run and two RBIs. German Marquez allowed two earned runs over five innings to get the win.
The Rockies have righted the ship, are in control of their own destiny and are back at home. They face a pitcher in Despaigne who has an elite ground ball rate and has allowed only three home runs in 45 1/3 innings. That makes him a good pitcher for home run-friendly Coors Field, but even so he has a very low career strikeout rate and will not be fooling Colorado hitters. Chatwood hasn’t been good at home either, but should receive enough run support to suffice.
