Cardinals rally to complete sweep
St. Louis scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning Sunday afternoon to down the host Cubs 3-2. Paul Goldschmidt drove in Tommy Edman with the go-ahead run in the final inning. Goldschmidt ended the game 2-for-4 with the RBI double. Paul DeJong finished 1-for-3 with a solo home run. Edman was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Tyler Webb retired the only batter he faced to record the win in relief. Andrew Miller notched the save as he allowed one hit with one strikeout and no walks in a scoreless inning of work. Adam Wainwright draws the start tonight as he enters with a 13-9 record, 3.83 ERA and 1.37 WHIP plus 144 strikeouts over 162 1/3 innings.
D-backs have three-game win streak snapped
Arizona suffered a 6-4 loss at San Diego Sunday afternoon to drop to 80-76 overall and 41-40 on the road. Adam Jones helped pace the Diamondbacks offense as he finished 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Abraham Almonte was 1-for-4 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Nick Ahmed ended the contest 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Yoan Lopez took the loss in relief as he allowed two earned runs on three hits with no strikeouts or walks in one inning of work. Alex Young take the mound tonight for Arizona as he comes in with a 7-4 record, 3.27 ERA and 1.16 WHIP plus 65 strikeouts over 74 1/3 innings pitched.
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 5-0 in their last five road games. St. Louis is 6-1 in the last seven Wainwright road starts.
Arizona
The D-backs are 5-1 in their last six Monday games. Arizona is 1-5 in the last six Young home starts.
Prediction:
St. Louis is coming in red-hot after sweeping the host Cubs, but I love a good letdown spot and this feels like it. Arizona had to travel further and the D-backs returned to the comfort of their homes. The Cardinals have a bit of cushion in the diivsion race and with Young having a solid rookie campaign, I’m banking on him slowing down the Cardinals offense and benefiting from run support as Wainwright puts a lot of runners on base and is one mistake away from big trouble quite often.
