Stephen Strasburg (14-4, 2.60 ERA) will be on the mound for Washington, while New York counters with Noah Syndergaard (1-2, 3.29). Strasburg carries a 1.03 WHIP with 190 strikeouts in 162 2/3 innings. He allowed one earned run on six hits with eight strikeouts and three walks over six innings in a 7-1 home win over the Dodgers his last start. The run ended a franchise-record 36-inning scoreless streak for Strasburg. He has a 2.08 ERA in 78 2/3 road innings. Syndergaard makes his return to the mound after being out of action since the end of April with an arm injury. He had a 1.10 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings prior to getting injured. Syndergaard will be on a pitch count and is expected to eventually give way to Matt Harvey (5-6, 6.59) to split the pitching duties.
The Nationals come in with 92-61 record and are 47-29 on the road, while the Mets are 66-87 and 34-41 at home. Washington has won six of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone over seven times including the last four games.
New York won the series opener 7-6 as the Nationals rested many of their regulars. Travis d’Arnaud went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four RBIs to key the Mets. Nori Aoki was 3-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs. Asdrubal Cabrera finished 2-for-2 with two walks, a run and an RBI. Juan Legares finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Chasen Bradford picked up the win in relief. Alejandro De Aza had a triple and scored two runs for the Nationals. Howie Kendrick was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Adam Lind ended the night 1-for-3 with a home run, two walks, two runs and three RBIs. Victor Robles added a hit and two RBIs. Joe Blanton took the loss in relief.
Syndergaard shouldn’t be expected to be in top form and Harvey has been awful all season. Even though Strasburg has been spectacular, but Syndergaard and more specifically Harvey could conceivably get the total to go over on their own. And if Strasburg gives up a couple runs, even better.
