Clayton Richard (6-12, 4.84 ERA) will start for San Diego, while St. Louis counters with Lance Lynn (10-6, 3.05). Richard is coming off a complete-game shutout masterpiece at home, striking out six batters and allowing three hits while walking one in a 3-0 win over the Phillies. He carries a 1.53 WHIP plus a 4.96 WHIP in 13 road starts. Lynn has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last nine starts, with the Cardinals winning six of them. He has a 1.17 WHIP, while at home Lynn has a sparkling 2.62 ERA in 11 starts.
San Diego comes into action with a 55-69 record and is 22-39 on the road, while St. Louis is 63-61 and 35-27 at home. This is the first meeting between the two teams this season.
The Padres lost three of four games in a home series with the Nationals, scoring a total of six runs. In Sunday’s 4-1 defeat, rookie Dinelson Lamet allowed three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss. Jabari Blash had one of the Padres’ five hits and scored their lone run. The Cardinals split a four-game series on the road with the Pirates, dropping the last two contests including Sunday night’s MLB Little League Classic by a count of 6-3. Mike Leake was saddled with the loss as he gave up six earned runs in three innings. Jedd Gyorko paced the St. Louis offense with a double and a home run. Yadier Molina added three hits including a double, scoring two runs.
First off, the Padres offense has been abysmal lately and hasn’t been good all season. Now they face Lynn on the road, a pitcher who has been lights out at home and in recent starts. Couple that with Richard riding high after his season-best performance and you have a game that will be low-scoring in a pitcher’s park.
