Taijuan Walker (6-7, 3.83 ERA) gets the start for Arizona, while Robert Gsellman (5-5, 5.98) goes for New York. Walker has allowed a total of seven earned runs in 10 innings in his last two starts, losses at home versus the Cubs and at the Astros. He comes in with a 1.31 WHIP and has struck out 103 batters in 115 innings. The Diamondbacks have lost his last seven starts. Gsellman made his first start since late June on August 16, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks over 5 1/3 innings in a 5-3 home loss to the Yankees. The Mets have lost his last four starts dating back to June 15 as he has allowed 19 earned runs in 17 2/3 innings during that time.
Arizona comes in with a 67-57 record and is 28-34 on the road, while New York is 54-68 and 27-36 at home. This is the first game of a four-game series and the Diamondbacks lead the season series 3-0.
Coming in with a three-game losing skid, Arizona was swept at Minnesota over the weekend. The Diamondbacks lost Sunday’s game as they allowed nine runs in the bottom of the first inning, seven of those off starter T.J. McFarland. J.D. Martinez and Jake Lamb homered in the loss, while Chris Iannetta went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. The Mets have lost six of their last seven games, including Sunday’s 6-4 home loss to the Marlins. Jacob deGrom gave up five earned runs on 10 his over 6 1/3 innings to take the loss. Yoenis Cespedes went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs.
Walker is due for some luck to go his way and the Mets are the perfect antidote. Arizona will be salty and in need of a win coming off three straight losses at Minnesota, especially with the way Sunday’s game went down. Roll with the D-backs here.
