Today’s pitching matchup has Kenta Maeda (11-4, 3.76 ERA) on the mound for the Dodgers to face Justin Verlander (8-8, 4.11) of the Tigers. Verlander was rolling along, but gave up five runs in six innings to the Rangers earlier this week. Verlander now has 150 strikeouts with 63 walks and a 1.36 WHIP. Maeda is also coming off a poor outing, allowing four runs in 5.1 innings to the Padres last weekend. He has 104 strikeouts this season with 27 walks and a 1.13 WHIP.
The Dodgers have won the first two games in this series, picking up an 8-5 win on Friday and a 3-0 win on Saturday. Los Angeles is now 87-34 on the season and 36-20 on the road while Detroit is 53-69 overall and 29-30 at home.
Saturday’s game was a pitching battle as neither starter allowed an earned run. Michael Fulmer managed to take the loss despite going 7 innings and allowing 1 unearned run. The Tigers couldn’t get to the L.A. pitching. Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched five scoreless innings and the pen went four more. Kenley Jansen got his 33rd save in the win as well. Yasmani Grandal had a solo home run to lead the Dodgers while Justin Turner and Adrian Gonzalez each drove in a run.
The Tigers have their ace on the mound, and he could get back on track today, but even that may not be enough for a win. The Tigers got a tremendous effort from Fulmer on Saturday and still couldn’t win. Don’t look for the Detroit hitters to heat up against Maeda, who doesn’t string back-to-back poor starts together typically. If this game comes down to the pen, Los Angeles clearly has the edge.
