CC Sabathia (9-5, 4.05 ERA) will get the start for New York, while Boston counters with Cy Young Award favorite Chris Sale (14-4, 2.51). Sabathia has allowed exactly four earned runs in four of his last six starts including his last three. He carries a 1.31 WHIP and has actually been much better on the road this year, coming in with a 2.79 ERA in 58 innings as a visiting pitcher. He is 2-0 against Boston this season and has yet to allow a run in 14 innings of work. Sale has bounced back from his worst start of the season versus Cleveland on August 1, giving up a total of one earned run on six hits with 25 strikeouts and three walks over 15 innings. He allowed one run on four hits with 12 strikeouts and two walks over seven innings in his last start, a 3-2 win at the Yankees where he got a no-decision.
Boston enters with a 70-51 record and is 39-21 at home, while New York is 65-56 and 30-34 on the road. The two teams have split the last 10 games this season 5-5, with the Red Sox rallying to win the opener of this three-game series 9-6 on Friday.
After taking a 3-0 lead, the Red Sox gave up six in a row before a four-run bottom of the seventh inning propelled them to the win. Mitch Moreland contributed a big two-run single in the seventh, while Rafael Devers and Christian Vasquez each homered. Vasquez was 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs, while Devers totaled two hits. Addison Reed earned the win in relief and Craig Kimbrel picked up his 29th save. Boston used eight pitchers in the game. Todd Frazier and Gary Sanchez both homered for the Yankees, while Tommy Kahnle took the loss in relief.
Sabathia has owned the Red Sox this year and Sale is Sale. If its gets to the two tired bullpens early, it could be a different story but at least expect Sale to only give up a run or two and work deep into the game. The safest play here is the under.
