Jordan Montgomery (7-6, 3.94 ERA) will start for New York, while Boston will go with Drew Pomeranz (12-4, 3.39). Montgomery hasn’t seemed to hit a rookie wall, allowing only two total earned runs over 10 1/3 innings in his last two starts. He is coming off a no-decision against the same Red Sox in New York where he allowed one earned run on two hits with four strikeouts and three walks over 5 1/3 innings in a 3-2 loss. The Yankees have lost six of his last eight starts. Pomeranz has surrendered more than three earned runs only once in his last 11 starts, with the Red Sox winning eight of those games.
The Red Sox won two out of three in the Bronx last week, with Pomeranz winning his start in a 10-5 victory in the middle game of the series. Montgomery’s no-decision came opposing Chris Sale. The Yankees are coming off a four-game home-and-home sweep versus the Mets, while the Red Sox swept the Cardinals in a two-game series at Fenway Park after losing a makeup game with the Indians.
Boston rallied for a 5-4 win over the Cardinals Wednesday as Mookie Betts hit a game-winning two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning. Xander Bogaerts had opened the ninth inning with a solo home run. Closer Craig Kimbrel improved to 5-0 with the win. The Yankees downed the Mets by a count of 7-5 Thursday, with Gary Sanchez homering and driving in five runs. Luis Severino moved to 10-5 on the season with the win.
New York is in chase mode and needs every win over the Red Sox it can get. Montgomery and the Yankees’ bullpen should be able piece together a quality pitching performance. Expect New York to find some offense against Pomeranz, since he is a familiar pitcher who they saw only a week ago. Despite a dazzling strikeout rate, Pomeranz does skirt by on luck occasionally with a 1.34 WHIP.
