The pitching matchup for the contest is Matt Cain (3-9, 5.22) against Jose Urena (10-5, 3.76). Cain has had a poor season, showing he is far removed from the pitcher who received a big contract from the Giants in 2012. But he has been a little more serviceable of late, allowing seven earned runs on 22 hits over his last 18 innings and has seen his earned-run average drop from 5.56 to 5.22. Urena has been strong of late, surrendering more than three earned runs only twice over his last 13 starts. The Marlins have won three of his last four starts and in his one loss over that time, a 1-0 defeat versus the Nationals at home on July 31, he surrendered only one earned run on three hits over eight innings.
San Francisco and Miami have split the series, with the Giants taking Tuesday’s game 9-4 after dropping the opener to the hosts by a count of 8-3. San Francisco is 48-73 overall and 21-41 on the road, while the Marlins are 57-61 overall and 31-27 at home.
Tuesday’s game saw the Giants score seven unanswered runs after falling behind 4-2 in the fourth. Giancarlo Stanton socked his MLB-leading 44th homer of the season in the loss, which is also his astounding 23rd over his last 35 games. A.J. Ellis also homered in the loss while Christian Yelich and J.T. Realmuto both had two hits and drove in a run. But the Giants found their offense in the latter half of the game, highlighted by home runs from Denard Span and Ryder Jones. Madison Bumgarner picked up the win as he surrendered four earned runs on nine hits over six innings, while Junichi Tazawa was torched in relief as he gave up three earned runs on four hits without recording an out.
Urena has been in reliable form lately, but is perhaps pitching above his means and is due for some regression. Cain is a mediocre pitcher at this point of his career despite his recent outings that have been decent, leading the smart bet toward a disastrous outing being right around the bend. Both of these offenses have been good in recent days. Look at the over if you bet this game.
