Gomber outstanding in win
Cardinals lefty Austin Gomber threw five shutout innings in yesterday’s 7-0 win at Kansas City, giving up four hits while striking out three and walking one. Daniel Poncedeleon threw the final three innings to earn his first career save, giving up two hits with one strikeout and three walks. Matt Carpenter hit his sixth home run in seven games to help lead the offense. He was 1-for-5 with the 2-run homer, his 32nd of the season. Yadier Molina finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs. Jose Martinez went 3-for-4 with a double and two driven in. Paul DeJong had a solo home run in five at-bats. Jedd Gyorko was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run. Harrison Bader ended the night 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs.
Duda, Phillips have two-hit nights
Lucas Duda and Brett Phillips each went 2-for-4 in Friday night’s defeat to help pace the offense. Jorge Bonifacio was 1-for-4 with a double, while Adalberto Mondesi finished 1-for-4 with a triple. Burch Smith suffered the loss as he surrendered five earned runs on six hits, with no strikeouts and one walk over 1 2/3 innings.
Jack Flaherty (5-6, 3.27 ERA) will start today for St. Louis, while Kansas City turns to Danny Duffy (7-10, 4.70).
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 2-7 in Flaherty’s last nine starts. St. Louis is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
Kansas City
The Royals are 14-43 in their last 57 games. Kansas City is 1-8 in its last nine interleague home games.
Prediction:
The Royals are in full rebuild mode, which is crazy considering how recently they went to back-to-back World Series. But winning in a small market often comes with this kind of cost. Flaherty hasn’t pitched as well lately as he did early in the season, but if there is any lineup he can shut down it’s KC’s. Duffy has been a major disappointment this year and it’s hurting his value if the Royals ever decide to deal him. Anyway, the Cardinals are the smart pick here.
