Lynn taking Gray’s spot in Yankees’ rotation
Lance Lynn will take Sonny Gray’s spot in the Yankees’ starting rotation. Lynn logged 4 1/3 innings of scoreless ball in his Yankees debut Wednesday against the Orioles. The plan was originally for Lynn to work in long relief, but with Gray struggling, manager Aaron Boone will give him a shot in the starting rotation. There was some thought the Yankees could give Gray’s rotation spot to up-and-comer Justus Sheffield, but with the Bombers in the thick of a pennant race, now might not be the time to unveil their prized prospect. Lynn hasn’t been especially impressive this year (4.89 ERA over 106 2/3 innings), though he’s certainly a better option than Gray right now.
White Sox’ Covey lets in seven runs in loss to Royals
Dylan Covey coughed up seven runs (four earned) in 4 1/3 innings and was charged with a loss to the Royals on Wednesday. A pitcher can’t ask for a more favorable matchup than the Royals, who are last in the major leagues in run scoring — so this beat-down is extra discouraging for Covey and his fantasy owners. He can’t even blame it on the defense as it was his own throwing error that led to two of the unearned runs. He notched only one strikeout against three walks and five base hits in the losing effort. He falls to 4-7 with a 5.57 ERA and 1.57 WHIP after 14 starts. His poor 51:33 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 72 2/3 innings doesn’t indicate success is on the horizon any time soon.
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Yankees are winless in their last five games overall.
Chicago
The White Sox have lost seven of Covey’s last eight starts overall.
Prediction:
The Yankees just got swept in four games by the Red Sox at Fenway. Last night was particularly disheartening to the Bombers, as they blew a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth and lost the game in extra innings. With how poorly the Yankees are playing right now, the White Sox are worth a flier as a long shot tonight. They Yankees are 1-5 in their last six road games versus a right-handed starter and the White Sox have won four in a row.
The Pick: Chicago White Sox +175
