Rangers’ Colon hit early and often against A’s
Bartolo Colon was knocked for six runs on nine hits over seven innings in Thursday’s loss to the A’s. It was a steady slog from the first pitch for Colon, who surrendered two runs in the first inning, one in the second (that on a Matt Chapman home run) and another three in the fourth inning. If there’s one silver lining in this outing, it’s that Colon was at least able to save the bullpen by toughing it out through seven innings. The veteran right-hander has been lit up in his first two starts coming out of the All-Star break, yielding a combined 11 runs on 17 hits over 11 2/3 innings in losses to the Indians and now the A’s. He’ll hit the road to take on the Diamondbacks next time out as he tries for a reduction on his current 5.02 ERA and 1.26 WHIP (118 1/3 innings).
Diamondbacks’ Godley gives up four runs in no-decision
Zack Godley wasn’t at his best on Thursday afternoon, surrendering four runs on seven hits across 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Cubs. On the plus side, he did rack up six strikeouts while issuing only one free pass. For as bad as he was though, he left in line for the victory before Brad Boxberger’s melt-down in the ninth inning. After a breakout 2017 campaign, Godley has fallen flat on his face this year, compiling a woeful 4.73 ERA and 1.53 WHIP. He’ll look for better results when he takes on the Rangers at home on Tuesday.
MLB Betting Trends
Texas
The Rangers are winless in Colon’s last four starts overall.
Arizona
The Diamondbacks have won four straight when Godley starts against a team with a losing record.
Prediction:
Might as well ride the hot hand. The Rangers have won four straight, all on the road, and against two teams with winning records (Astros and Diamondbacks). They’re also 5-1 in their last six games versus the National League West, are 17-8 in their last 25 interleague road games, and are 21-7 in their last 28 interleague games versus an opponent with a winning record. The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, are 1-4 in their last five home games and have dropped eight of their last 10 at home when facing a team with a losing road record.
The Pick: Texas Rangers +157
