Cubs’ Hendricks strikes out eight but lasts just five innings
Kyle Hendricks struck out eight but allowed three runs over just five innings Tuesday in a loss to the Diamondbacks. The eight punchouts by Hendricks tied a season high, but he also gave up seven hits and issued two walks, needing a whopping 106 pitches to get through his five frames. Hendricks pitched into the ninth inning in a start in San Francisco a couple weeks ago, but he’s failed to go beyond five frames in five of his last six outings. He’ll look for better results Sunday in St. Louis.
Cardinals’ Gant keeps Cubs off scoreboard over five innings
John Gant tossed off five scoreless innings while scattering four hits and taking a no-decision in in a win over the Cubs in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Gant struck out two and walked three in the outing. However, the Cardinals were unable to hang onto their slim 1-0 advantage after he ceded way to the bullpen to start the sixth, eliminating his chances of earning a winning decision. He’ll try to pick up the “W” when he handles hosting duties against these same Cubs next time he takes to the mound. Gant will bring a 3.17 ERA and 1.15 WHIP (54 innings) into that affair.
MLB Betting Trends
Chicago
The Cubs are just 2-5 in Hendricks’ last seven road starts.
St. Louis
The Cardinals have lost seven of Gant’s last nine starts.
Prediction:
The under has cashed in both games in this series and there’s no reason in my eyes to go away from that trend heading into tonight. The under has hit in seven of the last 10 meetings between these two teams in St. Louis and is 38-18-3 in Victor Carapazza’s last 59 games behind home plate. Furthermore, the under is 4-1 in the Cardinals’ last five games, is 4-1 in their last five divisional matchups, and is 20-9 in Hendricks’ last 29 starts.
The Pick: Cubs/Cardinals under 8.5
