Padres vs. Mets Prediction
After being rained out on Sunday Night Baseball last night, the New York Mets were able to push the start of Jacob deGrom to tonight’s series opener at home versus the San Diego Padres. Is New York the right play with their best pitcher on the hill?

Padres split doubleheader at Phillies
San Diego rolled to a 10-2 win in game one of its doubleheader Sunday at Philadelphia, but could not muster any offense in the second contest as it fell 5-0. Travis Jankowski went 2-for-5 with a double, a run and two RBIs from the leadoff spot in the opener. Carlos Asuaje was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Wil Myers contributed a 2-run homer in five at-bats. Eric Hosmer was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Hunter Renfroe finished 3-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI. Freddy Galvis went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs. Tyson Ross picked up the win as he gave up two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks over five innings. In game two, Luis Perdomo suffered the loss as he allowed three earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk over 6 1/3 innings. Jose Pirela and A.J. Ellis had the lone hits for the Padres, both singles.
Starting today’s game for the Padres will be rookie Eric Lauer (5-6, 4.87 ERA).
Mets split shortened series at Yanks
The Mets had their series finale Sunday night at the crosstown rival Yankees postponed due to rain. It will be rescheduled Aug. 13 at 7:05PM ET. The postponement shifits deGrom’s start tonight. He enters with a sparkling 1.68 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP, striking out 149 batters in 123 1/3 innings. He only has a 5-4 record due to a continued lack of run support, highlighted by his last two starts where he gave up a total of one earned run yet came away with a pair of no-decisions. Fellow Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard was placed on the 10-day disabled list with hand, foot and mouth disease. Additionally, outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is still dealing with heel issues since returning and season-ending surgery is being contemplated as a last-resort option.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are 5-17 in their last 22 Monday games. San Diego is 7-23 in its last 30 games overall.
New York
The Mets are 16-37 in their last 53 games overall. New York is 7-21 in its last 28 home games.
Prediction:
Something has to give in deGrom’s starts. Eventually there has to be a game where the Mets provide him with a boatload of runs, right? I’m going to say he gets adequate support tonight. Lauer has pitched better the last couple months, but faltered his last time out and could be hitting a rookie wall. With the Padres showing how much they struggle against power right-handed arms last night against Vince Velasquez, it should be more of the same today. I’m going to bet on the Mets to win here by multiple runs.
