Padres’ Richard so-so in road no-decision vs. Diamondbacks
Clayton Richard allowed three earned runs, five hits and four walks with two strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision Sunday in Arizona. Richard wasn’t particularly sharp, throwing just 49 of his 81 pitches for strikes, and he did uncork a wild pitch while also hitting Jon Jay with a pitch on two separate occasions. The good news is that Richard continues to keep the ball in the park, allowing just two homers across 44 innings over his past seven outings. While he has managed to be a little less hittable in two July outings, his walks are way up, issuing nine free passes over 11 innings in the month. If it’s not one thing it’s another with the southpaw, who is back to his mediocre ways after a strong four-game winning streak from June 4-22. He’ll try and finish up the first half on a positive note and get back to .500 in his next scheduled start Friday against Tyler Chatwood and the visiting Cubs.
Phillies’ Arrieta goes seven scoreless innings in win over Marlins
Jake Arrieta was excellent Friday against the Marlins, allowing just three hits over seven scoreless frames as part of a 2-0 victory. It was his first scoreless start since May 29. Arrieta walked three and fanned three while inducing 11 grounders. He’s now gone seven innings in back-to-back outings, earning victories in both of them. Arrieta has only fanned 72 batters in 103 innings this season, but he’ll still carry a 3.23 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 18 starts going into the All-Star break.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are 19-40 in their last 59 games versus the Phillies and are 4-11 in their last 15 games in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia
The Phillies have won four of Arrieta’s last five starts.
Prediction:
The under is a perfect 7-0 in the last seven meetings in Philadelphia and is 4-1 in Richard’s last five starts versus the Phillies. The under is also 33-16-2 in the Padres’ last 51 road games and is 4-1-1 in their last six road games versus a right-handed starter. On the other side, the under is 16-5-1 in the Phillies’ last 22 games overall and has cashed in four straight home games.
The Pick: Padres/Phillies under 8
