The pitching matchup today has James Paxton (8-3, 3.19 ERA) on the mound for the Mariners to face Charlie Morton (7-3, 4.06) of the Astros. Morton has won six of his last seven decisions and has 78 strikeouts this season with 30 walks and a 1.35 WHIP. Paxton has won his last three starts, allowing just five earned runs in 19.1 innings. He has 100 strikeouts on the season with 30 walks and a 1.16 WHIP.
These two have split their first two meetings of this series, with Seattle earning a 9-7 win on Monday and the Astros picking up a 6-2 win on Tuesday. Seattle is 47-48 overall and 20-26 on the road while Houston is 63-31 overall and 30-20 at home.
On Tuesday, the Mariners were held to just two runs on six hits. Brad Peacock continued his great season, improving to 8-1 with a win. Peacock pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits with nine strikeouts. Sam Gaviglio allowed five runs over six innings to fall to 3-5 on the season. Evan Gattis had a pair of home runs to lead Houston in the win. He now has 10 home runs on the season. Jose Altuve added three hits and a RBI to improve his average to .351 this season.
Both pitchers taking the mound today have grown accustomed to good results. However, the good results are something that everyone in Houston has grown accustomed to this season. Seattle can’t say the same. While I think Paxton will have a competitive start, I don’t see him getting much run support. Eventually Houston should be able to get Paxton out of the game and add a few insurance runs on the bullpen.
