Yankees’ Tanaka struggles in return from disabled list
Masahiro Tanaka lasted only 4 1/3 innings in his return from the disabled list Tuesday, allowing three runs to take a no-decision in the Yankees’ loss to the Orioles. It could have been worse, as Tanaka gave up two runs in the fourth inning but then stranded the bases loaded. He probably should’ve been pulled after that when the Yankees took the lead, but manager Aaron Boone left his righty in and Tanaka served up a game-tying homer to Manny Machado on his first pitch of the fifth. He’s now allowed 17 dingers over 77 innings this season. Tanaka will take the ball again Sunday in Cleveland.
Indians’ Bauer throws eight scoreless innings in no-decision
Trevor Bauer was denied a victory after blanking the Reds for eight innings and striking out 12 on Tuesday. Bauer is sure to be fuming after his 4-0 lead turned into a 7-4 loss in the ninth, but there wasn’t much chance of the Indians sending him back out for the shutout after 111 pitches. Bauer struck out 12 for the fourth time in nine starts, and he’s up to 168 strikeouts in 129 1/3 innings this season. In 2016, he struck out 168 batters in 190 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Yankees have won eight of Tanaka’s last 10 starts.
Cleveland
The Indians have won six of Bauer’s last eight home starts.
Prediction:
The over is 36-15 in Jerry Meal’s last 51 games behind the home plate on Sunday and is 4-0 in Bauer’s last four starts when he pitches the fourth game of a series. On the other side, the over is 9-3 in Tanaka’s last 12 starts, is 20-8 in his last 28 road outings, and is 13-4 in his last 17 starts when he faces the American League Central. One of the best plays in baseball this season has been the over in Cleveland Indian home games. No need to go away from that trend on Sunday given how both teams can swing the bats.
The Pick: Yankees/Indians over 9
