Baez has another big night
Cubs second baseman Javier Baez finished 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and five RBIs in Saturday night’s 11-6 victory at the Padres. Kris Bryant was 2-for-5 with two runs, while Jason Heyward was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs. Ian Happ went 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk and three runs. Kyle Schwarber was 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk and two runs. Kyle Hendricks picked up the win as he allowed two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks over five innings.
Hosmer homers in loss
Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer has been slumping, but broke out long enough to belt a 2-run homer in four at-bats Saturday. Carlos Asuaje went 2-for-2 with two walks. Hunter Renfroe contributed a pinch-hit 2-run homer. Luis Perdomo took the loss as he was shelled for five earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks over 4 1/3 innings.
Jon Lester (11-2, 2.45 ERA) starts today for the Cubs, while the Padres counter with Eric Lauer (5-5, 4.40).
MLB Betting Trends
Chicago
The Cubs are 11-3 in their last 14 games. Chicago is 7-3 in its last 10 meetings in San Diego.
San Diego
The under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings. San Diego is 25-57 in its last 82 Sunday games.
Prediction:
Lauer has turned into a solid pitcher in the Padres rotation after a rough start to his MLB career. He nearly threw a complete-game shutout his last time out. Although his pitch count was high, the confidence he took away from that start against the Dodgers can’t be understated. With how weak the Padres offense is, I doubt they hit Lester very hard. The under on an extended getaway day is the best play on the board here.
