A’s Jackson falls just short of earning quality start vs. Indians
Edwin Jackson yielded three runs (two earned) on five hits over 5 2/3 innings while taking a no-decision in Saturday’s 11-inning win over the Indians. Jackson struck out three while walking four in the contest. He was on the hook for the loss until the A’s burned the Tribe bullpen late to send the game to extras. Solitary runs scored on his watch during the first, second and sixth innings. The well-traveled veteran is pitching to a solid 2.45 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in three starts since the A’s purchased his contract from Triple-A Nashville in late June, but there’s little reason to believe he’ll be able to keep those numbers down — Jackson has posted earned-run marks north of 5.00 in each of the last two seasons. He’ll try to continue to rage against the dying of the light in a road showdown with the Giants in his next scheduled outing.
Giants’ Bumgarner just so-so in start vs. Cardinals
Madison Bumgarner allowed four earned runs, seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in a Sunday’s 13-8 win against the Cardinals. MadBum didn’t bring his best stuff to the hill on Sunday, but he left with a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning. The offense added five more runs in the bottom of the frame to ensure he would earn his second victory. Baseball is a weird game, as he had managed a 1-2 record with a 1.67 ERA over his past four outings, all quality starts. He struggles with his control and he picks up the win. That’s just the fantasy gods paying you back a little. He’ll close out the first half next Saturday against the visiting Athletics.

Prediction:
Jackson has been great over his first 18 1/3 innings this season, posting a 2.45 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP, while Bumgarner owns a 2.51 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 32 1/3 innings of work. That said, the over is 9-1-1 in the last 11 meetings between these two teams, is 10-4-1 in the Giants’ last 15 interleague games, and is 12-3-1 in the A’s last 16 games played on Friday.
