Mets head into break with loss
New York lost by a score of 8-3 Sunday at home against Philadelphia in its final game before the All-Star Break. The Mets allowed four runs in the first inning and another two in the sixth to go down 6-0 en route to the defeat. Zack Wheeler suffered the loss as he surrendered six earned runs on eight hits over five innings, striking out seven and walking two. Pete Alonso helped lead the New York offense as he went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Adeiny Hechavarria finished 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit solo homer. Amed Rosario ended the contest 2-for-4 with a double. Jason Vargas draws the start tonight for the Mets as he enters with a 3-4 record, 3.77 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 63 strikeouts over 71 2/3 innings pitched.
Marlins unable to rally back
Miami trimmed a four-run deficit in the top of the eighth inning Sunday, but ultimately lost 4-3 at Atlanta in its final game before the All-Star Break. Garrett Cooper paced the Marlins offense as he finished the game 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Miguel Rojas went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Yadiel Rivera finished 2-for-4 with a double. Trevor Richards took the loss as he surrendered four earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and five walks over five innings. Caleb Smith draws the start tonight for Miami as he comes in with a 4-4 record, 3.50 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 88 strikeouts over 72 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Mets are 3-10 in their last 13 games overall. New York is 2-9 in its last 11 games versus the NL East.
Miami
The Marlins are 4-12 in their last 16 home games. Miami is 2-5 in the last seven Smith home starts.
Prediction:
It’s always a bit tough to bet on the Marlins, but that decision becomes a little easier when at home against the disastrous Mets. Smith is enjoying a fantastic season and shouldn’t need a whole lot of run support here. I haven’t really trusted Vargas all season and while he’s pitched better than I expected over the last couple months, I think the Marlins scratch across enough to support Smith and grab the win.
