Phillies’ Pivetta struggles in no-decision vs. Pirates
Nick Pivetta was tagged for three runs (one earned) on five hits over 2 2/3 innings in a no-decision Friday against the Pirates. Pivetta struggled to find the strike zone, issuing a pair of walks, hitting a batter, and throwing just 45 of 74 pitches for strikes. He also struck out a pair of batters. Staked to an early four-run lead, the toxic combination of Pivetta’s wildness and the Phillies lackluster defense, led to his early departure in the third inning. The floodgates opened up shortly after Gregory Polanco reached on a dropped third strike, and a throwing error put him and Colin Moran in scoring position with one-out in the frame. Pivetta managed to coax an RBI groundout from ensuing batter Elias Diaz, but was chased after serving up back-to-back two-out singles to Corey Dickerson and Josh Harrison. The 25-year-old owns a 4.62 ERA with an impressive 106:29 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 89 2/3 innings this season. He’s primed to rebound with a tasty matchup against the Mets on the road next week.
Orioles’ Gausman allows three runs vs. Twins
Kevin Gausman pitched decently in a no-decision against the Twins on Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits over his five innings of work. The right-hander punched out five on the afternoon while walking one. He made it through the first four innings unscathed, but the Twins broke through for three runs in the fifth, including a solo home run by Max Kepler. Gausman will carry a 4.11 ERA and 1.31 WHIP into Thursday’s start against the Phillies.
