Hernandez homer sends Red Sox to win
Boston eked out an 8-7 victory at Toronto Thursday night as Marco Hernandez hit a tie-breaking pinch-hit home run in the top of the ninth inning. Brandon Workman picked up the win in relief as he gave up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout and two walks over two innings. Rafael Devers went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, two walks and two runs. Michael Chavis finished 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. J.D. Martinez ended the contest 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Eduardo Rodriguez starts tonight for the Red Sox as he enters with an 8-4 record, 4.79 ERA and 6 WHIP with 102 strikeouts over 97 2/3 innings.
Boyd strikes out 13 in win
Detroit rolled to an 11-5 victory Thursday afternoon at Chicago to avoid a three-game sweep. Matthew Boyd picked up the win on the mound as he gave up four earned runs on nine hits with 13 strikeouts and no walks over 5 1/3 innings. Miguel Cabrera helped pace the Tigers offense as he went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, a double and two runs. Niko Goodrum finished 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs. Jeimer Candelario ended the game 1-for-5 with a solo home run. Gregory Soto starts today for Detroit as he comes in with an 0-2 record, 8.83 ERA and 1.96 WHIP with 12 strikeouts over 21 1/3 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
Boston
The Red Sox are 7-2 in their last nine games versus the AL Central. Boston is 4-0 in the last four Rodriguez starts on Fridays.
Detroit
The Tigers are 13-38 in their last 51 games overall. Detroit is 0-4 in its last four series openers.
Prediction:
Soto doesn’t appear to belong in the major leagues at this stage of his career. Expect a potent Red Sox offense to get at him early and often, then probably do the same to the Tigers bullpen. I can’t find any good argument for Detroit here. Take the visitors.
