Mets’ Wheeler dominates in no-decision vs. Pirates
Zack Wheeler limited the Pirates to five hits over seven shutout frames Wednesday in a no-decision. Wheeler registered seven strikeouts while allowing just one free pass over 105 pitches. All five hits were singles including two of the infield variety. The seven-inning performance matched Wheeler’s longest start of the year. The right-hander had been in line for the win—it would have been his first victory since April 29—but had to settle for a no-decision after Jeurys Familia and Anthony Swarzak combined to blow a two-run lead in the ninth inning. Wheeler will take an 11-start winless streak into his next outing Wednesday against Toronto.
Blue Jays’ Estrada takes loss to Angels in Anaheim
Marco Estrada allowed two earned runs, three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over seven innings in a loss against the Angels on Friday. Estrada threw 56 of his 100 pitches for strikes, and he certainly deserved a better fate. Andrew Heaney was just a touch better in this pitcher’s duel. He has been impressive in the month of June, turning in quality starts in all four of his outings, going 2-1 with a 1.76 ERA. He’ll look to get back into the win column Wednesday at Houston opposite LHP Dallas Keuchel.
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Mets have dropped 10 of Wheeler’s last 11 starts.
Toronto
The Blue Jays have won 10 of their last 13 home games but dropped back-to-back games against the Tigers the last two days.
Prediction:
Estrada had pitched well throughout the month of June but ran into the Astros’ buzz saw in his last outing, allowing three earned runs (four total) on seven hits with two walks across just five innings. The strikeouts were an issue, as he posted just one. The Mets are a light-hitting team but perhaps Estrada won’t regain his form for another start or two and the over is 5-2-1 in the Mets’ last eight games overall. The last 14 times Estrada has started Game 1 of a series, the over is also 12-2.
The Pick: Mets/Blue Jays over 9
