Angels’ McGuire to start Sunday vs. Orioles
Deck McGuire will start against the Orioles on Sunday. McGuire was acquired from the Rangers for a player to be named later or cash considerations a little over a week ago, and he was recalled from Salt Lake on Thursday. A former first-round pick out of Georgia Tech, McGuire had an ERA of 3.22 over eight starts with Round Rock last year with 40 strikeouts in 44 innings. While he doesn’t have elite stuff, he’s an interesting risk against the awful Baltimore lineup for someone who wants to take a chance.
Orioles’ Gausman holds down Mariners in last start
Kevin Gausman limited the Mariners to just one run over six innings Tuesday but had to settle for a no-decision. Gausman was locked into a pitcher’s duel with James Paxton, with Paxton having the edge in innings and strikeouts but Gausman ultimately allowing one fewer run. That lone tally came on a Kyle Seager solo home run, as Gausman yielded a mere five hits and a walk while whiffing four. Gausman was in line for his first win in eight starts before the Orioles’ bullpen blew it. He’ll take a 4.20 ERA into this weekend’s home matchup versus the Angels.
MLB Betting Trends
Los Angeles
The Angels have won just twice in their last eight road games.
Baltimore
The Orioles are 5-16 in Gausman’s last 21 starts.
Prediction:
I’m not going to stop anyone that wants to fade the Orioles. They’re awful and if you fade them today, you’re getting plus odds with the Angels. But there are three reasons why I’m not going that route today. The first is that Gausman has gone three straight starts of allowing two or fewer runs. It’s not like the Angels are facing a gas can today. The second is that McGuire was just rocked by Boston on Tuesday while allowing three solo home runs in four innings. Granted, Baltimore isn’t Boston but the Orioles do have some pop. Finally, the Angels are a public team today. With over 60% of the betting tickets coming in on the Angels, I’m not going to hop on a public team, especially an underdog.
That said, I’m not going to back a bad Baltimore team either. Instead, the under is 4-1-1 in the Angels’ last six games, is 5-1 in the Orioles’ last six contests, and has cashed in 21 of Gausman’s last 29 starts overall. I see the under as a better play this afternoon.
The Pick: Angels/Orioles under 10
