Red Sox Rodriguez struggles in loss to Mariners
Eduardo Rodriguez surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits over four innings in Saturday’s loss to the Mariners. Rodriguez pitched well against the M’s at Safeco last time out, but he was unable to repeat the feat in front of the home crowd. Mitch Haniger got things going in a sour direction for the southpaw on Saturday, burning him for an RBI double in the first inning. He would go on to surrender an unearned run in the third inning and three more earned in the fourth. He finished the evening with two strikeouts against two walks. Rodriguez had not allowed more than two runs in any of his previous six starts, so it’s probably fair to toss him a mulligan for this showing. It’s possible that he’d simply been exposed too much in back-to-back starts against the same team. He will try to get back on track when he carries his 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 92/26 K/BB ratio (81 2/3 innings) into a huge road showdown with the Yankees next Friday.
Yankees’ Sabathia takes loss against Rays
CC Sabathia gave up two runs (one earned) over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Rays on Friday. It could have been worse, as Sabathia escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first inning. He went on to give up runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The veteran southpaw fanned four and walked one in the loss. He’s now 4-3 with a 3.18 ERA through 14 starts this season. Up next is an interleague start against the Phillies on the road.
