Yankees’ Gray holds Nationals to two runs over five innings
Sonny Gray held the Nationals to two runs over five innings Monday for his fifth win of the season. Gray yielded six hits, but he issued only one walk and struck out seven Nats. The 28-year-old right-hander is now 5-4 on the season with a 4.89 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 66/33 K/BB ratio in 73 2/3 innings. He’ll go for win No. 6 this weekend at Tampa Bay’s Tropicana Field.
Rays’ Font goes 4 2/3 innings as Rays beat Yankees
Wilmer Font tossed 4 2/3 innings of one-run ball Sunday in the Rays’ defeat of the Yankees. The only run he gave up came on a solo shot by Aaron Hicks in the bottom of the fifth. Font surrendered only three other hits and one walk while striking out five. The 28-year-old right-hander has looked sharp now in two straight outings and might get a more permanent spot in the Rays’ rotation if he can keep it up, though for the season his ERA is still over 7.50.
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Yankees are 41-14 in their last 55 games overall and 11-3 in their last 14 games against the rest of the division.
Tampa Bay
The Rays are 4-0 in their last four home games and 7-3 in their last 10 games against the rest of the division.
Prediction:
For whatever reason, the Yankees have struggled against the Rays’ bullpen-by-committee approach in their last two meetings with Tampa. Thus, I don’t feel comfortable laying the -175, even with Gray pitching well. The under, however, is 4-0 in Gray’s last four starts and is 4-1-1 in his last six road games. On the other side, the under is also 7-0 in the Rays’ last seven games against the rest of the American League East and is 33-16-3 in their last 52 games overall.
The Pick: Yankees/Rays under 8
