Cardinals’ Weaver allows four earned runs in loss to Padres
Luke Weaver allowed four earned runs on nine hits and a walk in a loss to the Padres on Wednesday. It’s the second straight four-run outing for Weaver, who holds a disappointing 3-6 record and 4.52 ERA in 73 2/3 innings this season. The 24-year-old right-hander looked to be turning a corner in May, but he’s been knocked around in back-to-back starts by the Padres and Reds — two of the worst offenses in the league. Weaver will try to get back on track in his next start on the road against the Phillies.
Phillies’ Velasquez strikes out six in win vs. Rockies
Vince Velasquez earned his fifth victory of the season on Thursday, striking out six and limiting the Rockies to two runs on one hit and a pair of walks over 6 1/3 innings. Velasquez was nearly perfect through the first six innings, allowing just a second-inning walk to Gerardo Parra who was then erased on a double play. The Rockies finally broke through in the seventh with an RBI double from Trevor Story and an RBI single from Gerardo Parra. He has had his ups and downs over his 14 starts this year, but the strikeout numbers have remained elite with 89 punchouts across 74 innings. He’ll look to run his winning streak to two when he takes on the Cardinals at home on Tuesday.
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis

Philadelphia
The Phillies are 3-13 in Velasquez’s last 16 starts coming off four days of rest and are 1-4 in his last five outings overall.
