Newcomb impresses again
Braves left-handed starting pitcher Sean Newcomb was fantastic again Saturday as he threw six shutout innings in a 1-0 home victory over the Padres. He allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked one. He is now 8-2 on the season and his ERA dropped to 2.70. The only offense was provided by Charlie Culberson as he socked a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. Culberson went 2-for-3 with the home run. Arodys Vizcaino picked up his 14th save.
Lyles a tough-luck losing pitcher
San Diego starter Jordan Lyles couldn’t do a lot more other than also provide all the offense in Saturday’s loss. He gave up only one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk over seven innings. Jose Pirela and Hunter Renfroe each had a double in the game to lead a Padres offense that was held to four hits.
Matt Strahm (1-2, 2.55 ERA) will pitch today for San Diego, while the Braves go with Julio Teheran (4-4, 4.31).
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The over is 6-2 in the last eight Padres games following a loss. San Diego is 24-54 in its last 78 Sunday games,
Atlanta
The under is 8-2 in the last 10 Braves home games. The under is 12-4-1 in Teheran’s last 17 home starts.
Prediction:
Strahm has been solid enough for San Diego since joining the staff, while Teheran can be shaky at times and is coming off a DL stint. This seems like a good shot to take the underdog, one that had been playing good baseball over the last several weeks and could still salvage a four-game split with a win today.
