Pirela bright spot in loss
San Diego second baseman Jose Pirela finished last night 2-for-4 with a run out of the leadoff spot to try and spark his squad in a 4-2 loss at Atlanta. The defeat ended a two-game winning streak for the Padres. Pirela improved his batting average to .277 with the hits. Eric Hosmer was 1-for-4 with a double and drove in two. Franmil Reyes was 2-for-4 with a double, while A.J. Ellis was 2-for-3 with a double. Tyson Ross took the loss as he allowed three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and a walk over six innings.
Sanchez stellar once again
Atlanta starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez was dominant Thursday night as he threw seven shutout innings to improve to 3-0 on the season with a 1.93 ERA. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Ender Inciarte paced the offense as he went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs. Ozzie Albies was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI.
Clayton Richard (5-6, 4.40 ERA) will start today for the Padres, while the Braves are going with Brandon McCarthy (5-3, 5.03).
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The under is 8-2 in the last 10 Padres games on Fridays. San Diego is 11-5 in its last 16 games overall.
Atlanta
The Braves are 1-7 in their last eight Friday games. Atlanta is 11-4 in the last 15 meetings.
Prediction:
San Diego has shown a lot of fight lately and McCarthy is hittable. So is Richard, but his groundball tendencies can often keep him out of big innings for the opposition. I’m going to take a shot at the Padres continuing their strong play of late and getting the win here as an underdog.
