Padres’ Lauer allows three runs in loss to Marlins
Eric Lauer surrendered three runs in five innings and was charged with a loss to the Marlins on Friday. He was stacking walks like firewood — issuing seven free passes in the ballgame, including one with the bases loaded. It took him 111 pitches to get through just five frames. The left-handed rookie is struggling to adjust to the majors as shown by his 2-4 record and 6.64 ERA. He has walked 24 batters and teed up seven home runs in just 39 1/3 innings.
Cardinals’ Weaver allows four runs in five innings in last start
Luke Weaver struggled to throw strikes and allowed four runs in five-plus innings against the Reds on Friday. He walked five batters and burned 100 pitches just to get through five frames. He fanned three and yielded seven knocks, only one of which went for extra bases. He didn’t have his best stuff but he was able to tough it out and keep his team in the ballgame. They eventually won in extra innings. Weaver’s record holds at 3-5 with a 4.61 ERA through 13 starts.

San Diego
Despite beating the Cardinals on Tuesday night the Padres are just 6-13 in their last 19 games versus St. Louis and 17-46 in their last 63 games played at Busch Stadium.
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 8-2 in Weaver’s last 10 starts versus a team with a losing record and 8-2 in his last 10 outings after scoring two runs or less in their previous game.
Prediction:
The Cardinals are one of the most inconsistent teams in baseball but they should be able to jump the Padres tonight. San Diego is just 1-5 in Lauer’s last six starts and is winless in his last five road outings. The Cardinals have also been successful off a loss, going 6-1 in their last seven games following defeat.
The Pick: St. Louis Cardinals -1.5
