Nova shuts down Cubs
Pittsburgh right-hander Ivan Nova navigated through a tough Chicago Cubs lineup on the road with ease Sunday afternoon as he limited them to one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over 5 2/3 innings in a 7-1 victory. The Pirates led 1-0 through five innings and then put up a five-spot in the sixth to put it away. Josh Harrison finished 2-for-5 with a solo home run to help pace the offense. Elias Diaz finished 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Josh Bell went 1-for-1 with three walks and a run. Gregory Polanco was 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk and three RBIs.
Goldschmidt, Marte help D-backs complete sweep
Paul Goldschmidt stayed red-hot Sunday as he went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, a walk, two runs and two RBIs in an 8-3 win at Colorado to complete the three-game sweep. His average shot up from .210 to .254 in a span of five games. Ketel Marte had an even bigger game as he was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, two runs and three RBIs. Chris Owings finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Zack Godley gave up two earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over 5 2/3 innings to earn the win.
Pittsburgh will send Joe Musgrove (2-1, 1.89 ERA) to the mound tonight, while the Diamondbacks will counter with Patrick Corbin (6-2, 2.87).
MLB Betting Trends
Pittsburgh
The under is 7-2 in the last nine Pirates games overall. Pittsburgh is 13-6 in the last 19 meetings.
Arizona
The Diamondbacks are 3-7 in the last 10 home meetings against the Pirates. Arizona is 16-7 in Corbin’s last 23 starts.
Prediction:
Arizona had such a fantastic series at the Rockies that I could see a letdown happening here. While Corbin has been very good this season, Musgrove has looked sharp since coming off the disabled list. With Pittsburgh needing a win to get back to .500 and entering in good form after Sunday’s game, I like the visitors to secure the upset tonight.
