Braves give Newcomb plenty of run support vs. Padres
Sean Newcomb allowed just three hits and three walks with four strikeouts over six scoreless innings in a win Tuesday in San Diego. Newcomb threw just 55 of his 95 pitches for strikes, including just nine first-pitch strikes to the 21 batters he faced. However, despite being behind early in counts Newcomb wiggled out of trouble and had the luxury of plenty of run support in the quality start. His next scheduled start is set for Tuesday at home against the Mets. The southpaw is having an All-Star caliber season, posting a 7-1 record with a 2.49 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 68 strikeouts over 68 2/3 innings.
Dodgers’ Stripling throws five scoreless innings vs. Pirates
Ross Stripling held the Pirates off the scoreboard for five innings in the Dodgers’ 5-0 victory Tuesday. Stripling wasn’t terribly efficient, needing 89 pitches to get through his five frames. A big reason for that is he struck out seven batters and a Chris Taylor error in the fifth inning also added to the righty’s workload. He kept the Pirates at bay, though, yielding just four singles and no walks. Stripling now boasts a 1.89 ERA and an absurd 49/5 K/BB ratio over 38 innings across seven starts since moving into the Dodgers’ rotation. He’ll try to keep it rolling on Sunday versus the Braves at home.
MLB Betting Trends
Atlanta
The Braves have won just nine times in their last 29 games versus the Dodgers in Los Angeles and are 9-21 in their last 30 games versus the Dodgers overall.
Los Angeles
The over is now 6-1 in the last six meetings between these two teams at Dodgers Stadium after cashing again Saturday night.
Prediction:
The Braves are one of my favorite underdog plays on the board on Sunday. They’re 7-1 in Newcomb’s last eight starts, are 5-1 in his last six road outings and have won five of his last six outings coming off a quality start in his last appearance.
The Pick: Atlanta Braves +150
