Pirates’ Kuhl allows two runs in six innings vs. Cardinals
Chad Kuhl allowed two runs over six innings and did not earn a decision against the Cardinals on Saturday. He struck out five batters, walked two and surrendered four base hits in the quality start. Marcell Ozuna got him for a solo home run in the second inning. The other run came in on a Tommy Pham single in the fifth. Kuhl has been steady and solid so far this year, with a 4-3 record, 3.86 ERA and 1.32 WHIP through 12 starts. He’ll face a stiff challenge against the Cubs on Friday.
Cubs’ Montgomery limits Mets to just two hits in last start
Mike Montgomery gave up one run on two hits over six innings while taking a no-decision in Saturday’s 14-inning win over the Mets. Montgomery could have conceivably pitched deeper into the game — he threw 76 pitches (53 strikes) over his six innings on the mound — but given that he’s not completely stretched out, it makes sense that manager Joe Maddon would try not to push his luck. Length aside, it was a nice afternoon’s day at the office. Only a solo home run by Michael Conforto in the sixth inning prevented him from a shutout performance.
His first two starts on the year have seen him allow just one run over 11 2/3 innings and he will continue to work in the rotation until Yu Darvish (triceps) is ready to return. Given his recent work, fantasy parties desperate for a back-end starter could do worse than a Montgomery flier in the short term. His value drops to essentially zero once Darvish reenters the rotation.
