Scherzer dominant in win
Washington ace Max Scherzer carried a shutout into the eighth inning Tuesday night in a 4-2 home victory against the Rays. He allowed two earned runs on five hits with 13 strikeouts and no walks. Sean Doolittle came on in the ninth for his 15th save. Matt Adams hit a solo home run to help lead the offense. Juan Soto finished 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk. Wilmer Difo went 1-for-3 with a triple, a run and an RBI.
Miller drives in two
One of the lone bright spots for Tampa Bay last night came in the eighth inning as a Brad Miller two-run double broke up Scherzer’s shutout and cut the deficit to 4-2. Scherzer managed to work out of the inning with no further damage and the Rays went down quickly in the ninth. Matt Duffy and Carlos Gomez both had a hit and scored a run in the defeat. Nathan Eovaldi took the loss on the mound as he gave up four earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings of work.
Jonny Venters (1-0, 0.87 ERA) will start for the Rays today in what will be a bullpen game. Tanner Roark (2-6, 3.61) gets the nod for the Nats.
MLB Betting Trends
Tampa Bay
The under is 12-3-1 in the last 16 Rays games. The under is 9-4 in the last 13 Tampa Bay interleague games.
Washington
The under is 9-0 in the last nine Nationals interleague games. The under is 16-5 in the last 21 Washington interleague games.
Prediction:
The under trend is pretty strong with this game. With the Rays using many different pitchers, it should keep the Nationals off balance and without a feel for the opposing pitcher. Roark is typically solid and gets to face a Tampa Bay offense that is not difficult to navigate through. I’d rather take the under here than pay a lot of juice on Washington or believe in a Tampa Bay upset.
