Cubs’ Lester struggles early but settles in vs. Pirates
Jon Lester allowed four runs over six innings of work Tuesday in the Cubs’ 8-6 win over the Pirates. Lester got in trouble early, yielding four hits – including a home run – and three runs over the first two frames before settling in after that. It was only the second time in 11 starts this season that the left-hander has given up four earned runs, but he still managed to pick up his fifth victory. Lester faces the Mets in New York on Sunday.
Mets’ Matz set to go vs. Cubs on Sunday
Steven Matz (finger) played catch on Thursday. Matz exited his last start Tuesday with a sprained middle finger. He’s slated to throw a bullpen session on Friday and expects to make his scheduled start Sunday against the Cubs. The left-hander hasn’t been pitching deep into games but holds a decent 3.55 ERA over 45 2/3 innings this season.
MLB Betting Trends
Chicago
The Cubs are a perfect 5-0 in their last five meetings with the Mets overall and are 5-2 in Lester’s last seven starts versus New York.
New York
The Mets are 8-3 in their last 11 home games versus the Cubs.
Prediction:
The over has been a great bet when these two teams meet, including cashing improbably last night when the Cubs scored six runs in the 14 inning to help push the score over the total. That said, the under is 5-0-1 in the Cubs’ last six road games versus a left-handed starter and is 3-1-1 in Lester’s last five road starts. The under has also hit in five of the Mets’ last six home games.
The Pick: Cubs/Mets under 8
