Newcomb continues strong season
Braves second-year left-handed starting pitcher Sean Newcomb allowed two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks over seven innings to get the win Thursday in a 4-2 win over the Nationals in the series opener. Arodys Vizcaino allowed a hit and struck out three in the ninth inning to record his 10th save. Ender Inciarte was 2-for-4 with a run scored to help pace the offense. Ozzie Albies finished 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run and an RBI. Preston Tucker added an RBI double in three at-bats.
Rendon drives in both Nats runs
Washington third baseman Anthony Rendon was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in Thursday’s loss. He helped the Nationals tie the score at 2-2 in the top of the third, but Atlanta scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third and added an insurance run in the seventh. Trea Turner finished 1-for-3 with a walk and scored both runs. Tanner Roark allowed four earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and five walks over 6 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Stephen Strasburg (6-4, 3.13 ERA) starts today for the Nationals, while Mike Foltynewicz (4-3, 2.55) draws the start for the Braves.
MLB Betting Trends
Washington
The Nationals are 13-3 in their last 16 road games. Washington is 21-7 in its last 28 games overall.
Atlanta
The Braves are 1-7 in Foltynewicz’ last eight home starts. The under is 5-2-2 in the last nine meetings in Atlanta.
Prediction:
Atlanta is playing with a ton of confidence right now and the argument can be made that Foltynewicz is pitching every bit as well as Strasburg through two months this season. With Atlanta being at home, I’m more than willing to take a shot on a first-place team with a solid pitcher to win as a home underdog.
