Nationals’ Scherzer secures MLB-leading eighth win
Max Scherzer secured his major-league leading eighth win after giving up four runs over six innings against the Marlins on Friday.Scherzer wasn’t as sharp as usual. He surrendered seven hits, including a long game-tying two-run homer to Derek Dietrich in his final inning of work. But the Nationals scored three runs in the seventh to get him the win. Scherzer fanned four, walked a pair, and also hit a batter.
This was the first time this season that he allowed more than two earned runs in a start. Still, Scherzer ranks third in the NL with a 2.13 ERA. He’ll face the Orioles in Baltimore next time out.
Orioles’ Hess excellent in win over Rays in last start
David Hess fired 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over the Rays on Friday. Hess scattered four hits while walking three and striking out three. It wasn’t exactly the most imposing lineup, but Hess has now delivered two quality starts in his first three tries in the majors. He should continue to get chances with the Orioles, though he’s a risky play mixed fantasy leagues.
MLB Betting Trends
Washington
The Nationals are 4-0 in their last four games against the Orioles but are 7-15 in their last 22 games played in Baltimore.
Baltimore
The Orioles are 1-4 in their last five home games, are 3-13 in their last 16 interleague games, and are 0-8 in their last eight interleague games versus a team with a winning record.
Prediction:
With Scherzer taking the mound and Hess coming off a successful start in his last outing, I like the under tonight. The under is 4-0 in the Nationals’ last four games, is 12-1 in their last 13 interleague games, and is 6-1 in their last seven interleague road games. On the other side, the under is 4-1 in the Orioles’ last five games, is 4-0 in their last four interleague home games and is 4-0 in their last four games versus the National League East.
The Pick: Nationals/Orioles under 8.5
