Marlins’ Smith racks up eight strikeouts in win over Mets
Caleb Smith delivered another dominant performance in Tuesday’s victory over the Mets, racking up eight strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings of one-run baseball. Smith scattered just three hits and two walks in the game. The only run that he allowed came on a Thomas Nido sacrifice fly in the second inning.
The 26-year-old southpaw has been unexpectedly relevant in fantasy leagues this season, ranking 17th in all of baseball with 65 strikeouts. He’ll carry a 3.83 ERA and 1.22 WHIP into Monday’s start against the Padres in San Diego. He’s still owned in only 24 percent of all Yahoo leagues and makes for a very intriguing addition in lieu of his double start week on tap against the Padres and Diamondbacks.
Padres’ Lauer has an encouraging outing in the last start
Eric Lauer whiffed seven while limiting the Nationals to just one run over six innings Tuesday in a no-decision. Lauer tamed a Nats lineup that had scored 10 runs the night before, holding them to just six runs and two walks to go along with his seven punchouts. A Bryce Harper solo homer was his lone blemish on the night.
The outing was welcomed after he was lit up for 10 runs over his previous two starts. Lauer will try to make it two straight quality starts in a nice matchup against the Marlins the next time out
MLB Betting Trends
Miami
The Marlins are a perfect 5-0 in their last five games against the Padres.
San Diego
The Padres have lost five of Lauer’s last six starts and are 3-10 in their last 13 games versus National League East competition.
Prediction:
I really like the Marlins in this matchup getting plus odds. Smith currently owns a 31% strikeout rate this season, which is key in a matchup against a Padres lineup that has a 24% strikeout rate against lefties this season. Smith also receives a boost pitching at spacious Petco Park. On the other side, Lauer has been mostly a disaster this season and while the Marlins own a weak offense, they’ve also been plucky in some spots. Hopefully one of those spots is today.
The Pick: Miami Marlins +102
