Blue Jays’ Gaviglio outstanding in spot start vs. A’s
Sam Gaviglio was outstanding in a spot start for the Blue Jays on Saturday scattering six hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball in a no-decision against the Athletics.
Gaviglio racked up six strikeouts on the afternoon, throwing 61 of his 88 pitches for strikes. Given how well he performed in this one, he should stick around to fill Jaime Garcia’s spot in the rotation for as long as the left-hander is sidelined. His next turn should come on Friday against the Phillies in Philadelphia.
Phillies’ Eflin has rain-shortened start vs. Cardinals
Zach Eflin allowed four runs — two earned — over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision Saturday against the Cardinals. Eflin was an out away from qualifying for the win — despite not being overly sharp — before the rain rolled in. After a delay, he was replaced by Luis Garcia, denying him a shot at his second win. (It also meant he couldn’t suffer his first loss of the year.) The start was easily his worst of three this year, and through Saturday he’s got a 1.56 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 17 1/3 innings. Appearances have been sporadic despite the strong numbers, and it’s unclear when the Phils might use the right-hander next.
