Cubs offense falters again
Chicago lost at home twice against Cleveland as it fell 10-1 and 1-0 in a pair of mid-week games. In Wednesday’s nailbiter loss, Chicago only mustered three hits. Anthony Rizzo recorded a double and also drew a walk, while Willson Contreras had a single and a walk. Kyle Schwarber accounted for the other hit. The lack of offense ruined a strong start by Jon Lester, who allowed one earned run in the top of the third inning and was otherwise stellar. He gave up six hits, struck out four and walked one over seven innings. Chicago is now 25-21 on the season, good for fourth place in the NL Central.
Kyle Hendricks (3-3, 3.40 ERA) draws the start for the Cubs.
Giants stymied at Astros
San Francisco could not pull off the upset at Houston Wednesday, dropping a 4-1 decision for a second loss in as many days. Jeff Samardzija surrendered four runs (three earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and five walks over 4 2/3 innings to get saddled with the defeat. Gorkys Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a triple and scored the lone Giants run. He was driven in by Buster Posey on a double. Brandon Belt added two singles in four at-bats. The Giants are now 24-26 on the season.
Left-hander Derek Holland (2-5, 4.94 ERA) will start today for San Francisco.
MLB Betting Trends
San Francisco
The Giants are 18-39 in their last 57 road games. The over is 5-2-2 in the last nine Giants games overall.
Chicago
The Cubs are 12-2 in their last 14 home games versus San Francisco. Chicago is 2-7 in the last nine Hendricks starts on a Friday.
Prediction:
It will only be a matter of time before the Cubs’ offense starts rolling and Holland might be the perfect pitcher to make that happen. He’s struggled this season and has been getting hit hard, so expect Chicago’s power bats to touch him up some. Conversely, Hendricks can be trusted most any time he steps on the mound and I like his chances against a Giants offense without a lot of scary pieces.
