Athletics hammer Detroit
The Oakland Athletics were dominant on Thursday, picking up a 17-3 win at Detroit in the series opener. Oakland is now 20-25 on the season, 6-15 on the road and 23-22 with the over. The Athletics have Frankie Montas on the mound this evening. He is 4-2 on the season with a 2.78 ERA.
The Athletics racked up 16 hits on Thursday, putting up five multiple-run innings. They had five home runs as a team in the victory. Jurickson Profar drove in four runs with a grand slam while Josh Phegley had four hits and drove in four runs. Marcus Semien added a hit with three RBI. Chris Bassitt pitched eight strong innings for his second win. He didn’t allow a run and struck out seven.
Tigers on a skid
Detroit had its losing streak grow to four games on Thursday in the 14-run loss to Oakland at home. Detroit is now 18-24 on the season, 9-12 at home and 23-18 with the under. The Tigers have Daniel Norris on the mound tonight. He is 2-1 on the season with a 36.3 ERA.
The Tigers had Spencer Turnbull get rocked for six runs in four innings, though just one was earned. All five pitchers that took the mound for Detroit gave up multiple runs. Dawel Lugo drove in all three runs for Detroit on a three-run home run. Ronny Rodriguez added a triple.
MLB Betting Trends
The Athletics are 40-12 in their last 52 games against AL Central opponents, but just 2-11 in their last 13 road games.
The Tigers have lost five straight home games and they are 4-14 in Norris’ last 18 starts.
Oakland has had Detroit’s number for some time now. The Athletics have won the last 10 meetings overall, eight straight in Detroit and 20 of their last 27 in this series. Montas has been consistent on the mound, giving up two earned runs or less in six of his eight starts. Norris hasn’t been terrible in his own right, but he doesn’t get deep into games either. Detroit’s pen has been struggling as of late and they clearly don’t have the hitting that Oakland has.
MLB Prediction: Oakland Athletics -165
